Harmony Within: The Key to Your Own Nirvana

Ummmmm....Warm, gentle breezes flow out from across the windswept sands of the Eastern Kalahari, blowing towards the Capitol City of Gaborone in the South East District of Botswana, just a few hours drive from the Administrative and Financial Capitols of South Africa, Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of city life on either side of the border, we find ourselves yearning for the simple solitude and quiet of the surrounding countryside and bush, where the vast open spaces of the Botswana landscapes’ semi-arid wilderness meets the rugged foothills that dot the horizon. But how can you unplug, unwind, let go, and BREATHE amongst the hustle and bustle of today's busy lifestyles? How do we find harmony in our own lives? Hello, I’m Grandmaster Shu Wai Chung (Laoshi E.J. Scott), and I’m here to take you on a journey of discovery to find the ‘Harmony Within’!

WHAT IS HARMONY?

In psychology, harmony refers to a positive state of inner peace, calmness, and balance, as well as the feeling of being tuned with the world. In the social sciences, it is used to describe a pattern of relationships within a social group and between individuals and their social context.

Having harmony in our lives means that we will be less likely to be impeded by those mundane, menial, and repetitive patterns that we find ourselves oftentimes too caught up in. And whether it be in our personal lives, our professional lives, or our interpersonal relationships and interactions with others, being harmonious and having harmony in our lives is the “oil that makes the machine operate smoothly”!

But, how can you create harmony or create a harmonious environment for yourself? First, let’s look at a key factor in our understanding of our conscious, tangible realities and our subconscious, intangible ones.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR WORLD

My Taoist Teacher and Mentor of over 30+ years, a High Priest of the Wudang Shaolin Temple Sect, taught us that there are “three types of worlds in which we can choose to live”, and these worlds will determine the outcome of our lives, our peace, and our harmony. The FIRST World is that which we see around us; that is, the TANGIBLE, PHYSICAL world that is most familiar to us. A world full of the constraints and limits of our 5 Senses: that which we can TOUCH, that which we can TASTE, that which we can SEE, HEAR, and SMELL. This is the world of the mundane for a lot of us, as we get caught up in the everyday cycle of jobs, kids, relationships, projects, etc.

The SECOND world is often firmly interwoven into the FIRST world, and it is the world EXPECTATIONS AND UNFULFILLED DREAMS! In this world, you find the dictates, hopes, dreams, wishes, and expectations of family members, of society and culture, of friends, of spouses, of religion and spiritual beliefs. Basically, this is a world that EVERYONE ELSE believes that you should live in, based not on YOUR passions and expectations for your OWN life, but on THEIRS! This world is often the most disappointing and regret-filled world, because you have been forced to live in it by outside influences and pressures from everything and everyone else, EXCEPT YOU!

Then, there is the THIRD and MOST IMPORTANT WORLD OF ALL! In THIS world, there is ONLY what YOU CHOOSE TO BRING INTO IT! It is not subject to any of the whims, ideas, notions and constructs of the other two worlds, and is one that exists COMPLETELY OUTSIDE OF CONVENTIONAL TIME AND SPACE as we know it. In THAT world, ONLY peace, tranquility, and perfect unity exist. My teacher then said that “in order to achieve blissful and harmonious Qi”, “you must learn how to live in all three worlds simultaneously, and in doing so, you will achieve Harmony…”

THE JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES

In our next segment, we will delve into some long studied and ancient disciplines to help us achieve the harmony we richly desire by using breathing techniques, mental focus, Qigong, and “moving meditation” by way of Wudang Taiji exercises for our beginners along this path to achieve Harmony in our lives. In the meantime, define your (3) worlds: What they are to YOU, YOUR understanding of them, YOUR interactions WITHIN them and responses TO them, and most importantly…WHAT you can change to create the Harmony that you seek! This has been Grandmaster Shu Wai Chung (Scott), and I’ll speak with you again as we walk this path of Harmony, together…

With Honor, Tolerance, and Respect
